Who We Are

Somerset Independent School District was established in 1922 after merging several small districts in the area. It consists of 85 square miles encompassing a southwest portion of Bexar County and a northwest portion of Atascosa County. Four school campuses (Early Childhood, Elementary, Junior High and High School) and the district offices are located within the town of Somerset, Texas, at the crossroads of South Loop 1604 West and Somerset Road, (seven miles southwest of the San Antonio's Loop 410. One elementary campus and one intermediate campus are located in Von Ormy. Because the district is served by two area codes (830 & 210), we use toll free "866" and "888" numbers.

All Somerset ISD schools provide a comprehensive standard education curriculum, in addition to, vocational, bilingual, gifted & talented, special education, alternative schooling, At-Risk, and migrant need programs. We are totally dedicated to ensuring that every child is given the best education to which they are entitled and are provided every opportunity to succeed. The teamwork between teacher-student-parent is the vital key to attaining this success. Students are given the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) test. Our school's accumulative scores are available for review at the district office.

Professional school counselors are available at each campus to provide student counseling services and academic assessment. Counselors also administer the national/state achievement tests and provide assistance to teachers in assessing student performance. Counselors are also available to students for their personal concerns. In conjunction with the district's Support Services Department, counselors are actively involved in identifying those students considered to be at risk of dropping out of school, those who may have learning disabilities or discipline concerns, special education requirements, or other needs.

The Somerset ISD Support Services Department provides principals, teachers, counselors, parents, students, and the community with a myriad of support services to make them aware of the many resources available to them through the Somerset ISD. Staff includes a special education psychologist, a bilingual and migrant coordinator/parent liaison, and a family specialist. The department also works with adults throughout the community in a variety of educational programs, including "English as a Second Language" classes, GED classes, and American citizenship classes.

Each of our schools provides a comprehensive physical education and sports program geared to teaching students the many values of athletics. Going beyond the mere basics of "winning and losing," our programs strive to teach good sportsmanship, teamwork, and the value of good physical health and exercise. Participation in school athletics for both boys and girls is contingent upon the student remaining academically eligible, according to school and U.I.L. rules. The following sports and related activities are offered: football, volleyball, baseball, basketball, softball, cheerleading, tennis, track & field, swimming and golf.

Students at Somerset ISD can also involve themselves in numerous school sponsored extracurricular activities besides athletics, such as Army JROTC, band, speech and drama, academic decathlon, school clubs and other organizations. One of the most popular programs is the "Ag" (FFA agriculture) program. The students maintain a Ag-Barn for the raising of varied livestock for competition in junior livestock shows across the state and involve themselves in other civic activities.
